  • Course objectives: Students will acquire all the knowledge necessary for further education for keeping up with applied professional courses.
  • Course content: Functions of a real variable; Functions of two or more real variables; Applications of functions in economics and business; Differential calculus; Applications of differential calculus in economics and business; Integration (integral) calculus; Applications of integration calculus in economics and business; Linear algebra; Applications of linear algebra in economics and business (Leontief model, optimization of the linear objective function from two or more variables), Arrays and rows in mathematics; Applications of arrays and rows in financial mathematics.

  • Course objectives: Introducing students to the basic elements of management and system management; training students for planning, organization both in manufacturing companies and service providers, motivation, communication and leadership of employees, as well as for control of the work process and results.   • Theory: Lectures are carried using the combined “ex cathedra v case” method. Theoretical instruction makes up 50% of class load and is carried out using the “ex cathedra” method, whereas the rest of the content is carried out using the “case” method, i.e. by presenting cases that illustrate the theoretical part.
  • Practicals: Seminar papers comprise the preparation and development of a seminar paper, and its defense.

Business Informatics

  • Course status: compulsory, first semester

  • Course objectives: Familiarizing students with the basic concepts in informatics, technological components of a computer, computer networks and related software. Mastering the use of a personal computer, its operating system, basic software components of MS Office, and the use of Internet services.
  • Course outcomes: Ability to use a personal computer, associated operating system, software suite for office or home business and to use Internet services.

  • Theory: Systems, cybernetics and information systems: concept, properties and classification of systems; concept and application of cybernetics in system management; concept, classification and components of information systems. Computer hardware: Concept of a digital computer system; central processing unit; input devices, output devices, input/output devices, external memories. Arithmetic-logic foundations of a computer system: number systems and codes; arithmetic in a binary numeral system; basic logic operations; instructions and commands. Computer software: concept and classification of software; operating systems and their properties; Windows operating system; application software; MS Office software suite. Computer networks: concept and types of computer networks, transmission media, network devices, remote data processing, computer network architecture, protocols, and topologies. Internet: concept, origins and development of Internet; Internet protocols; Internet services; Internet connection; Internet security.

Macroeconomics

  • Course status: compulsory, first semester
  • ECTS: 6
  • Course objectives: The main objective is to introduce students to the basic laws of macroeconomics and macroeconomic relations on which modern economies are based. Studying macroeconomic equilibrium, macroeconomic aggregates, investments, commodity exchange, balance of payments, living standard, and other macroeconomic categories. Special part of the course is dedicated to economic growth and instability, unemployment, inflation. We will also study the basic laws that govern the operation of modern economies. Course outcomes: After mastering this course, students will understand how an economic system operates, the importance of determining and implementing an economic policy, etc. They should also understand the importance of determining and implementing both national and regional development strategies.
  • Course content: Economics, macroeconomics and microeconomics. Social production and its general characteristics. Economic growth and development. Indicators and factors of economic growth and development. Aggregate production and its expressions. Basic mechanisms of economic operations and development management: economic system and economic policy. International macromanagement – macroeconomic categories (balance of payments, investments, sustainable economic development, living standard, etc.). Macroeconomic equilibrium. Cost-push and demand-pull inflation. Labor market and unemployment. Business (economic) cycle and the role of the state. Macroeconomic transition.

Seminar Paper

  • Status: compulsory, first semester
  • ECTS: 3
  • Description: Seminar paper is a student’s individual professional paper that aims at expanding and deepening the knowledge of a particular area. It addresses a narrow, specific topic, with the idea of bringing a current issue in focus and providing certain innovations in traditional approaches. The purpose of the seminar paper is to develop the skills of writing a comprehensive presentation and overview of a particular issue, to develop the ability of data usage, and create a basis for writing more complex individual papers. The first step in writing a seminar paper is choosing a topic. Suggestions regarding the topic may be provided by teachers, or students depending on their knowledge of a particular area. The topic may be related to both theoretical and practical aspects of a certain area. In both cases, it must meet the criteria of curentness, relevance, concreteness, accuracy, content specificity, etc. After choosing a topic, the next step is to consult the mentor regarding the selection of the material. The structure of the seminar paper comprises the title page, contents, introduction main part, conclusion and bibliography. When writing a seminar paper, it would be desirable to use relevant quotes so as to expand and extend the topic, as well as footnotes to explain specific problems, concepts or personalities mentioned in the text in more detail. Students should also think about the style. The style and language of the seminar paper should correspond to the scientific discourse, without expressive or colloquial elements. Sentences should be grammatically correct, clear and concise. Each sentence should serve the purpose of expanding and illustrating the chosen topic. It would also be advisable to use tables, charts, images and illustrations, especially where necessary.

SECOND SEMESTER

Business Economics

  • Course status: compulsory, second semester

  • Course objectives: Familiarizing students with the laws and all other factors that impact the efficiency and development of a company. Introducing companies as subjects of market economy, growth and development of companies. Current issues in the operation of modern companies and adaptation to domestic and global environment. Students should acquire knowledge that allows them to master the material in undergraduate academic studies.
  • Course outcomes: After successfully mastering the study program, students will be able to identify the basic trends in companies’ business operations, as well as the requirements for our national economy’s integration into the global division of labor. The knowledge and skills acquired in this course will allow them to successfully navigate various situations and to directly participate in economy.

  • Theory: Origins and development of economics as a science, fundamentals of entrepreneurship, characteristics of a company, types of companies by size, organization, activity and ownership. Company as a subject of market economy, managing company assets, cost management, business result management, and profit distribution management. Students will also study business efficiency of companies, their growth and development, and the basics of operational and strategic management.

  • Course objectives: Understanding the logic behind statistical (inductive-probabilistic) reasoning. Learning to calculate and correctly interpret the basic statistic indicators, mastering the most important (basic) statistical methods, assumptions and restrictions in their application, and learning to interpret the results obtained. Learning to correctly read and interpret the results of the appropriate software packages. Course outcomes: After completing the course, students will be able to independently perform simple statistical analysis of phenomena in economics and business possessing the inherent nature of stochastic variables.

  • Course objectives: Acquiring the minimum grammatical, lexical, and orthographic knowledge and automated skills, using English as a means of communication, improving comprehension, speaking, writing and reading skills. Course outcomes: Students will be able to understand standard business correspondence and to read texts from the given professional field.
  • Course content
    • Theory: Preparing students to engage in international communication by developing their language skills (speaking, comprehension, reading and writing). Adopting a relevant vocabulary, professional and technical lexis, the most effective collocations and phrases, training students to read professional literature.

  • Course objectives: The aim of this course is to help students master the basic knowledge of: role of small and medium-sized enterprises in global and domestic economy, strategies for the development of SMEs, programs, measures and activities referring to the establishment and development of SMEs, financial, marketing, legal and other functions of small and medium-sized enterprises, etc.

  • Course objectives: Introducing students to the importance of the creating and measuring strategic behavior values. Teaching students about the causes and mechanisms of value creation and realization. Helping them to master technical skills that will allow them to manage the process of value creation and realization through strategies and supplementary planning decisions. Course outcomes: Training students to analyze the strategic management process, i.e. a pragmatic approach to identifying basic steps, from strategic analysis to implementation and control of chosen strategies.

Business Ethics

  • Course status: compulsory, fourth semester
  • ECTS: 6
  • Course objectives: Educating students to adopt a business-humanist view of the world and a humanistic attitude toward work and people at work. Teaching them how to professionally formulate staff and understand the behavior of people in the workplace. Adopting the rules of business conduct and etiquette in interpersonal business communication.
  • Course outcomes: After successfully mastering the study program, students will adopt a culture of interpersonal communication, patterns of conduct, dress code, how to communicate and treat subordinates and superiors, as well as domestic and foreign partners.
  • Course content
    • Theory: In terms of theory, students will initially attend lectures in business philosophy, ethics as a science of morality, and business ethics. Position, role and importance of business ethics in creating corporate culture and climate, in developing an information and communication system, management system, especially leadership, in shaping interpersonal relationships in the workplace, decision-making system, control and responsibility motivation. The course will also explain the manifestations, causes and consequences of violations of business ethics and crisis ethics, economic crime, bribery, corruption, charging for services and quantities customers didn’t receive, frauds and other misconducts.
    • Practicals: Exercises will analyze specific forms of ethical and unethical conduct. We will study examples from existing practice, but also simulate cases that may appear in real life.

  • Course objectives: In the modern era, management has developed into a separate profession, so studying this discipline has become very important not only for professionals in the field of economics, but for others as well.  This is why familiarizing students with the subject, goals, and functions of human resource management is very significant.
  • Course outcomes: After successfully adopting the content of this course, students will learn how to approach and treat people in their company, how to introduce them to the work process, motivate, educate and reward them so as to achieve the best possible economic results, and create a positive and favorable working culture and climate.
  • Course content
    • Theory: Introduction to human resource management. Concept and development of human resource management. Importance and role of HRM. Planning and providing human resources. Organizational structure. Systematization of work positions. Recruitment. Selection. Performance measurement. Defining performance. Fluctuation and absenteeism. Human resource development. Learning and development. Career development. Relations with employees. Employees’ health and safety. Legal framework for employee relations. Employee empowerment. Rewarding employees.     • Practicals: In practical classes, we will analyze concrete examples from practice and draw conclusions. We will simulate particular situations and find ways, methods and means to solve them.

Microeconomics

  • Course status: compulsory, second semester
  • ECTS: 7
  • Course objectives: Microeconomic analysis studies economic activities of individual economic units. The object of analysis is the behavior of a representative enterprise, consumers and their interaction. This problem is approached at an intermediate level, i.e. corresponding to the globally used term Intermediate Microeconomics. The course links economic theory and applied analysis in the form of econometric research. This is why this course is particularly important for students who (i) want to expand their knowledge of economic theory; (ii) expect they will get an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge on practical, business or economic-political problems; (iii) seek to mathematically model economic and social processes. Upon completing the course, students will be able to follow and understand models of economic behavior used worldwide within the main trend in economic theory, as well as to analytically approach the solution of practical problems.
  • Course content: Subject matter is grouped into six large topic areas, each requiring approximately 10 classes, i.e. two and a half weeks. These topic areas include: 1. consumer choice and demand functions; 2. production, costs and profit maximization; 3. market supply and demand, equilibrium, comparative statistics; 4. monopoly and imperfect competition; 5. intermediate exchange and capital markets; 6. uncertainty, externalities and public decisions.

Entrepreneurship

  • Course status: compulsory, fourth semester
  • ECTS: 7
  • Course status: Introducing students to the purpose, key factors and business functions of entrepreneurship, and instructing them how to identify determinants of entrepreneurship, techniques and methods of designing and promoting development. Students should be familiarized with entrepreneurial spirit and provide them with the necessary knowledge so they could easily join in the growing trend of entrepreneurship after graduation.
  • Course outcomes: After acquiring the knowledge of this course, students should realize they must not be slaves to the existing knowledge and experience, but should always seek out new ones. They should discover new properties and functions in the existing factors of production and new ways to combine them. Students should be encouraged to convey and apply their professional experience in their domestic economy.

  • Course objectives: Familiarizing students with the position and role of market research in a business system and business system management. Mastering the concepts related to particular models of market research and expanding the knowledge and skills related to the use of models, application software and Internet services.

    • Theory: Market research dimensions. Origins, development, concept and importance of market research. Content and process of market research. Ethical aspects of research.   • Description: Seminar paper is a student’s individual professional paper that aims at expanding and deepening the knowledge of a particular area. It addresses a narrow, specific topic, with the idea of bringing a current issue in focus and providing certain innovations in traditional approaches. The purpose of the seminar paper is to develop the skills of writing a comprehensive presentation and overview of a particular issue, to develop the ability of data usage, and create a basis for writing more complex individual papers. The first step in writing a seminar paper is choosing a topic. Suggestions regarding the topic may be provided by teachers, or students depending on their knowledge of a particular area. The topic may be related to both theoretical and practical aspects of a certain area. In both cases, it must meet the criteria of curentness, relevance, concreteness, accuracy, content specificity, etc. After choosing a topic, the next step is to consult the mentor regarding the selection of the reference material.
    The structure of the seminar paper comprises the title page, contents, introduction main part, conclusion and bibliography. When writing a seminar paper, it would be desirable to use relevant quotes so as to expand and extend the topic, as well as footnotes to explain specific problems, concepts or personalities mentioned in the text in more detail. Students should also think about the style. The style and language of the seminar paper should correspond to the scientific discourse, without expressive or colloquial elements. Sentences should be grammatically correct, clear and concise. Each sentence should serve the purpose of expanding and illustrating the chosen topic. Seminar Paper

  • Status: Compulsory, seventh semester

  • Description: Seminar paper is a student’s individual professional paper that aims at expanding and deepening the knowledge of a particular area. It addresses a narrow, specific topic, with the idea of bringing a current issue in focus and providing certain innovations in traditional approaches. The purpose of the seminar paper is to develop the skills of writing a comprehensive presentation and overview of a particular issue, to develop the ability of data usage, and create a basis for writing more complex individual papers. The first step in writing a seminar paper is choosing a topic. Suggestions regarding the topic may be provided by teachers, or students depending on their knowledge of a particular area. The topic may be related to both theoretical and practical aspects of a certain area. In both cases, it must meet the criteria of curentness, relevance, concreteness, accuracy, content specificity, etc. After choosing a topic, the next step is to consult the mentor regarding the selection of the material.
    The structure of the seminar paper comprises the title page, contents, introduction main part, conclusion and bibliography. When writing a seminar paper, it would be desirable to use relevant quotes so as to expand and extend the topic, as well as footnotes to explain specific problems, concepts or personalities mentioned in the text in more detail. Students should also think about the style. The style and language of the seminar paper should correspond to the scientific discourse, without expressive or colloquial elements. Sentences should be grammatically correct, clear and concise. Each sentence should serve the purpose of expanding and illustrating the chosen topic. It would also be advisable to use tables, charts, images and illustrations, especially where necessary.

  • Course objectives: Introducing students to the place and role of information systems in a business system and business system management. Mastering the concepts related to information system development, database management systems, particular types of information system management, and expanding the knowledge and skills in the use of application software and Internet services.
  • Course outcomes: Ability to use the computer, popular applications in the field of operational and strategic management, creating simple applications. Ability to use available Internet services.
  • Course content
    • Theory: General concepts related to information systems. Role of information systems in management and decision making. Programming and programming languages. Databases: classic organization of data, concept of a database, database management system, database models – hierarchical, relational, network, object-oriented. Online analytical processing (OLAP). Development of information systems. Business information systems:  personnel, production, financial, marketing. Management information systems: transactional information systems, office automation information systems, decision support systems, top management support systems, expert systems. Internet, intranet, extranet and management information systems.
    • Practicals: Database management system MS Access: creating tables, linking tables, creating queries and query language SQL, Generating forms and reports and their customization. Data processing in a client-server system. Examples of a production, personnel, financial and marketing information system. Using MS Excel for multidimensional data analysis and decision support. Working online and using Internet services.

International Economics and Finance

  • Course objectives: Mastering the knowledge of international economic phenomena and relations and related terminology; introducing students to the basic relations in international economy, participants and nature of the global market; theories of international trade theory; regional integrations, and forms of international financial institutions, as well as quality of particular sources.
  • Course outcomes: After successfully mastering the study program, students will be able to recognize dominant trends in international economy and finance; to provide estimates on its quality and consequences; to recognize decision-makers, their motivation, flows of capital at international market and their impact on business conditions in the global economy and in international relations of individual countries; to identify the foundation of the international trade structure and global problems. In addition, they will be able to understand the sources and forms of international and regional finance, as well as the role and importance of regional economic integrations.

    • Theory: Fundamentals of globalization and the subject of international economy; main theories of international trade, characteristics and particularities of modern global market, changes in the balance of global economy; foreign exchange market, balance of payments; theories and types of exchange rate; concept and importance of international economic integrations and international cash flows; international monetary system and international financial development institutions.
    • Practicals: Active student participation in exercises, especially in the field of international economic operations, comparative analysis of individual countries’ level of development, regional communities, markets and finance.

  • Course objectives: It has long been recognized that environmental protection essentially involves the issue of environmental management, so environmental management standards have been defined without which any valid protection policy could hardly be organized. This system includes organizational structure, responsibilities, procedures and resources for development and realization of environmental policies. This is why the strategic concept of this course is to convey knowledge about the importance of spatial planning, management systems and environmental impact processes to our students.

  • Course content: Main problems of environmental protection, forms of pollution and their impact on biosphere. Air pollution: forms and sources. Water pollution: forms, sources and consequences. Final Paper in Four-year Studies Program

  • Course objectives: The aim of the final paper is to show a student’s ability to effectively and maturely solve the given complex problem which refers to their chosen area of study.  It is a professional paper on a given topic from a particular scientific field, longer and more complex in relation to a seminar paper. The final paper is written after a student has successfully passed all exams, submitted all seminar papers and successfully realized the required traineeship The purpose of the final paper is to train students in scientific research, but it also serves as the final test of the knowledge and skills for individual work and to expand the knowledge of the chosen area. The choice of the topic is influenced by numerous factors. Senior students usually possess enough knowledge to be able to choose and define the topic on their own, but they can consult their mentor as well. The choice of the topic should be in line with student’s interests, as well as previous activities and acquired knowledge. The topic of the final paper may refer to a theoretical problem or it can be an overview of a practical study of a specific phenomenon or case.  If he/she chooses a theoretical topic, the student should collect relevant literature, select and organize the content, create and finally present his/her final paper. When choosing a practical topic, a student’s task is to illustrate how the acquired knowledge has been applied on a specific example, case study or solution of a specific practical task. The next step is bibliographic preparation. Selecting sources of information is a specific creative act based on the knowledge acquired during studies and developed insight into the methods of obtaining information and processing the selected topic. The structure of the final paper includes the title page, contents, introduction, main part, conclusion and bibliography. When writing the final paper, it is advisable to use relevant citations which contribute to the explanation and elaboration of the topic, as well as foot notes to explain specific problems, concepts, or persons mentioned in the text in more detail. In terms of style, students are expected to express themselves accurately, using the style of scientific research at a higher level than when writing seminar papers. Sentences should be grammatically correct, logically sound and concise. Each sentence should serve its purpose, build upon and expand the chosen topic.
    The final paper should also contain tables, images, graphs and illustrations where necessary.
